At the age of 28, I moved from my hometown of New York City in search of new experiences.  I have been living in the United Kingdom ever since.  I’m married to a lovely Englishman and have three nearly-grown children.

My interests include, but are by no means limited to, needlework, travel, reading and writing.

How to Avoid the Wii Fit Plus

Before I begin, let me apologise for the long lapse between my first post and now. It wasn't lack of dedication that kept me away.  Villainous circumstances plotted against me in a dastardly attempt to sabotage my efforts and divert my attention.  And it worked a treat, I gotta tell ya.

It all started with a power failure which lasted most of the day and put me wa-a-ay behind schedule. That meant that I spent the whole of the following day catching up on all the household chores. No time for Wii Fit Plus or Wii Fit blog, I'm afraid.

Then Valentine's Day came along. My husband Awesome Dude, unbeknownst to me, had arranged a romantic evening  for the two of us. I was touched by this gesture as usually it's me who has to make the arrangements whenever we go out.  This time he did it all by himself. (Bless him)  Only now, I had to sort out the kids' dinner AND get ready for our night out. Wii Fit Plus never crossed my mind.  On the plus side, I did order a tasty yet healthy meal.  King scallops for the appetizer followed by a simple lemon sole, baked and served with a selection of fresh veg.  I was so proud of myself. So proud in fact that I treated myself to a creme brulee for dessert. Well, it was Valentine's after all.

The following Monday, of course, I began again.  I got off to a good start.  I had oatmeal for breakfast. For someone who stopped having breakfast about 36 years ago, that's quite a lifestyle change.  I must admit it does make a difference.  I feel more energetic at work and it keeps my hunger at bay till lunchtime.

Wii Fit Plus with Balance BoardI had a play around on the Wii Fit Plus that afternoon.  Did a couple of routines aimed at improving balance and posture, played a few games. It was only 15-20 minutes, but I did feel better afterwards.  Not just physically but emotionally too. I didn't have the sense of guilt that had been nagging me all weekend.  It was replaced by a sense of achievement and well-being at having done something towards my reaching my goal.

Had another go the Wii Fit Plus on Tuesday.  This time I tried a few yoga positions.  I used to be quite good at yoga in my younger days.  But then I graduated high school and entered the Real World.  Funny, I don't remember these moves being quite so hard to maintain.  Felt really good afterwards, like I was getting somewhere.  But I forgot it was Pancake Day and my hubby flips a mean pancake.  I overindulged.  I must have had about four of them with cherry filling.  So gorgeous, yuuuummmmm.

But it was a short-lived pleasure.  The guilt soon returned because I felt I had negated any benefits I had gained from my Wii workout.

Woke up the next day and realised that it was Ash Wednesday. What a good day to get back on the horse again. I can give up the sin foods for Lent and really work the Wii Fit Plus thing for 40 days. By then not only will I have slimmed down and toned up, but these new habits should become as firmly ingrained in my daily routine as brushing my teeth and combing my hair. Well, that was the theory anyway.  Unfortunately, real life keeps getting in the way of my good intentions.

Friday, my daughter, Sleeper Girl, came down with a virus.  While spending the weekend looking after her, I found myself slipping into the old habit of just grabbing whatever was quick and easy.  That usually meant a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar. And, yes, the Wii Fit Plus routine was put on the back burner.  Again.  The only exercise I got was climbing up and down the stairs to bring Sleeper Girl her meds and some light meals.  Actually I can't even refer to this as exercise.  It only counts if you run up and down the stairs.  This is something I am no longer capable of given the weakness in my right leg.

By Monday, Sleeper Girl was on the mend.  Start again?  Why bother?  The next day was my birthday and I knew I would never deny myself treats and snacks.

Well, there you have it.  Every excuse you could possibly need to avoid the Wii Fit Plus.  But don't just take my word for it.  Try them out for yourself.  With very little perseverance and practice you too can turn your Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board into an expensive paperweight and/or doorstop.

Next time I'll tell you how I stopped avoiding the Wii Fit Plus and started getting my husband's money's worth out of it.  (It was a gift, so technically, it's his money.)
